Learning is inferring the grammar of a domain

humans need way less trials to learn. Through “shared attention” children know when somebody wants to teach them something.

  • a test:
    Try the following experiment: take two bowls, a blue one and another of an unusual color—say, olive green—and tell the child, “Give me the tawdy bowl.” The child will give you the bowl that is not blue (a word he already knows)—he seems to assume that if you had wanted to speak about the blue bowl, you would have used the word blue; ergo, you must be referring to the other, unknown one.
