premotor cortex

The Premotor cortex (PM) lies within the frontal lobe of the
brain just anterior to the primary motor cortex. It occupies
part of Brodmann Area 6. It projects to Primary Motor Cortex but also partly directly down the Spinal cord. Typically,
it is further divided into a ventral and dorsal part. Other
terminology uses F2, F4, F5, F7; it is a mess.

tasks

  • planning and organising intentional movements
  • the dorsal premotor cortex is often associated with the coordination of movements in space
  • ventral premotor cortex is thought to be involved in the execution of specific patterns of movement, such as those used in grasping or manipulating objects.
