Supplementary motor area
The Supplementary motor area (SMA) is located in part of
area 6 (⇒Brodmann Area). It receives input from the Cingulate Gyrus, thalamus, sensory & PFC and gives output to the premotor and
primary motor cortex. Its function relates to the intentional
preparation for movement and procedural memory. Lesions
lead to mutism, akinesis; speech returns, but it is non-
spontaneous
