a presentation for the course “Introduction to Sleep and Dreams.”
Student Presentation 4 - Memory and other functions of sleep (and what happens without sleep) (questions to Katharina)
Please include:
Memory function of sleep
(Metabolite) clearance
Consequences of sleep deprivation
Other functions (learning, emotional processing)
May include: whatever else you find interesting, e.g. Targeted memory reactivation (current study project)
test
Memory Function of Sleep
Metabolite Clearance
during the day toxic substances are released:
β-amyloid (Aβ) (antimicrobic, ),
during sleep, anaesthesia:
60% increase in the interstitial space
α-synuclein (transports synaptic vesicles (therefore neurotransmitters in those vesicles))
and tau (stabilisation of microtubules)
Why? → Aβ is a byproduct
What do they do? → degenerating, leading to cell death
How are they washed away? → ISF and CSF
How does this occur during the night? ISF is widened by 60%, less pressure and therefore more exchange
